I am excited to inform you I am guest posting today over on
Badcredit.org. Nowadays with employment credit checks increasingly becoming the norm, I am asked frequently whether someone's bad credit will prevent them from being hired. To learn if bad credit will hurt your job search

Good post, Savvy. One of our clients requires that we check all of our employees who will work on their property. I totally get why they/we need the criminal background check and drug test, but cannot find a reason why we or they need the credit check. I basically check the box that says we have it and then seldom read it! Our service is so far from financial that I believe it doesn't make sense. It bothers me a bit that they require all vendors to do this, whether the services provided fall in any financial category or not. Seems like an abuse of power!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about applying for a part-time job and I was surprised they wanted to check my credit. My credit went down when the economy tanked but it is recovering. It's not bad but not in the 700 range like it used to be. I'm lucky because my credit isn't too low for me not to get the job. I told a friend the company was hiring and she said she couldn't apply because her credit was very poor. I felt so bad for her because she needs a job.
ReplyDeleteWebb,
ReplyDeleteI could only hope other HR professionals never read their employees credit information. It is definitely an abuse of power and not necessary in most instances. A criminal check should be sufficient.
Sheila,
ReplyDeleteThanks for providing real-life examples. Unfortunately, credit checks are being required far too often. I hope your credit improves soon.
I can understand that a bad credit report may raise red flags and require a further investigation, but I don't understand why people like Sheila's friend get turned away. As if a bad credit score meant you were more likely to breech confidentiality...
ReplyDeletefemmefrugality,
ReplyDeleteExactly, It seems like a form of hiring discrimination to me.
The answer is definitely yes. I love this post because people don't know that everything they do affects their potential job. I work in banking so everything from my credit score to what I post online is taken into consideration. Great post. Have a good weekend.
